Computing: Our Intent, Approach and Implementation

At The Marist, our Computing curriculum empowers children to become confident, creative and responsible digital citizens. We want our pupils to understand how technology works, how to use it effectively and how to stay safe online in an increasingly connected world.

We follow a carefully sequenced Computing curriculum based on the Teach Computing curriculum, which provides a progressive and ambitious learning journey across the three strands of the National Curriculum: Computer Science, Information Technology and Digital Literacy. Children develop both knowledge and practical skills through hands-on learning, problem-solving and opportunities to apply their understanding in meaningful contexts. From programming and debugging to creating digital content and understanding data, pupils learn how technology can be used purposefully, creatively and safely.

Online Safety is a key priority and is taught through the 2BeSafe programme, which supports children in developing the knowledge and understanding needed to navigate the digital world safely and responsibly. Through regular discussion and reflection, pupils learn how to make informed decisions online, manage risk, protect themselves and others, and develop positive digital behaviours.

Lessons are designed to be engaging, practical and inclusive, encouraging children to build upon prior learning and deepen their understanding over time. Pupils are given opportunities to work independently and collaboratively, developing resilience, logical thinking and creativity as they solve problems and create digital outcomes. A range of technologies and digital tools, including Purple Mash and other curriculum resources, are used to enrich learning and support the development of essential computing skills for the future.
