Latin

Our Approach to Latin

At The Marist, our primary intent in teaching Latin is to ignite curiosity and deepen understanding through engaging and memorable learning journeys that connect children with the roots of language, culture, and classical civilisation. We want our children to see Latin not as a ‘dead language’, but as a living key to unlocking meaning in the world around them—especially in English, where Latin underpins much of our vocabulary and grammar.

We aim to enable children to be active participants in Latin by developing their confidence in both written and oral forms. Through the Minimus scheme, which blends storytelling, Roman history, and accessible Latin, children encounter the language in a way that is both joyful and purposeful. This approach allows them to explore Latin in context, making connections with Roman life, British heritage, and the evolution of language.

We want children to view Latin as a tool for decoding and understanding—not just in language lessons, but across the curriculum. By learning Latin, they strengthen their grasp of English grammar, spelling, and comprehension, and begin to see patterns and roots that support their literacy development. We encourage children to ask questions about words, meanings, and etymology, and to build explanations based on evidence. We also want them to develop confidence in making links between ancient and modern cultures, and to appreciate how Latin continues to shape our thinking, our language, and our learning.

To ensure the children receive the highest quality provision, we work closely with Classics For All to support staff subject knowledge.
