Spanish: Our Intent, Approach and Implementation

At The Marist, our primary intent in teaching Spanish is to ignite curiosity and inspire confident, enthusiastic language learners who can think and communicate like linguists. We want our children to develop the skills to listen, speak, read and write in Spanish, while building the confidence to express themselves and explore new ways of thinking through language learning.

We aim to enable children to be active participants in Spanish, understanding how learning another language connects people, cultures and communities worldwide. Through Kapow Primary's Spanish scheme, children encounter the language in a way that is both accessible and ambitious, ensuring all pupils are supported to participate fully and achieve their potential.

We want children to view Spanish as a gateway to the wider world not just in language lessons, but as a lens for understanding diversity and global citizenship. By learning Spanish, they build the confidence to communicate beyond their own culture, encouraging them to become open-minded, active citizens who appreciate difference and engage meaningfully with people and places beyond their own experience.

To ensure the children receive the highest quality provision, we use Kapow Primary's Spanish scheme of work, which also supports staff in developing their subject knowledge and skills, so lessons are delivered with confidence and expertise.
