 Our Approach to Music

Intent & Implementation

At The Marist Catholic Primary School, music plays a vital role in helping children become confident, creative and expressive learners. Through a rich and inclusive curriculum, we aim to ensure that every child develops:

  • A secure understanding of the key elements of music, including pulse, rhythm, pitch, dynamics, tempo and notation.
  • The skills to sing, perform, compose, listen and evaluate confidently.
  • An appreciation of music from a wide range of genres, cultures and historical periods, helping them understand the wider world.
  • The confidence to express themselves, work collaboratively and enjoy the shared experience of music-making.

Our curriculum is supported by the Kapow Primary Music scheme, which ensures clear progression and high-quality musical learning from Year 1 to Year 6.

All pupils have music lessons every two weeks, with regular singing assemblies and opportunities to use tuned and untuned instruments.

Performance Opportunities

Music is brought to life through regular performances including:

  • Nativities, Advent services, school productions and class worships.
  • The annual Summer Music Concert and community performances at Our Lady's church and care homes.
  • The exciting opportunity for Year 5 to perform at the Young Voices concert at the O2 Arena.

Clubs and Tuition

Children can extend their musical learning through:

  • KS2 Chamber Choir and recorder club.
  • Peripatetic lessons provided by Surrey Arts, including piano, strings, woodwind, brass, percussion, guitar and voice.
