Our Approach to Maths
At The Marist we use a mastery approach for teaching Maths. Mastering maths means pupils acquiring a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject. We strive to ensure that Mathematics work is meaningful and purposeful. We wish pupils to feel confident and competent when using mathematics to enable them to make sense of the world and to solve real-life problems.
Throughout the school, children are given opportunities to engage in practical work using relevant materials and equipment, this is considered essential as the basis for the acquisition of the key concepts in Mathematics. Alongside this, the children also learn fundamental number facts and relationships which are the foundation of future work in Mathematics.
Mastery is about building firm foundations through fluency, reasoning and problem-solving. It is about extending children through depth rather than acceleration. Children are taught through whole class interactive teaching by their class teacher. All pupils have a daily mathematics lesson, in addition to the daily lesson, various intervention groups are in place in school to support all learners. Additionally, in early years and KS1, our pupils take part in short Mastering Number sessions. Mastering Number aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2. The aim over time is that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number.
The Marist follows the White Rose maths curriculum and in KS1 and KS2 we use the WRM Power maths scheme.
Please refer to the White Rose scheme of work for further details.
